About 810,000 Michigan children will start receiving food assistance benefits this month as the COVID-19 pandemic has affected access to school meals for children across the state.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is issuing additional benefits now through the end of March. Monthly payments will continue through June.

MDHHS said this is the second round of Pandemic EBT. Children will receive up to $741.6 million in assistance benefits that their families can use to pay for food at stores or online.

Hundreds of people descended upon Main Street in Uptown Greenwood to get fresh air and food from food truck vendors lined up between Oak and Maxwell avenues.

“We couldn’t have asked for better weather,” Uptown Manager Lara Hudson said.

The event – dubbed Food Truck Eats on Main Street – brought food trucks to the parking lot along Main Street between Oak and Maxwell. Thursday’s food offerings consisted of Taconmadre Mexican, The Rolling Dough Co., The Pound Cake Man, Lobster Dogs, Everything Egg Roll, Fast Daddy’s Burgers and BBQ, Pita Perfect and Common Pops.

USDA’s  Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert due to misbranding.

The chicken soup product contains and declares wheat as an ingredient but has an incorrect statement of “gluten-free” on the top label. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with allergic reactions to gluten are aware that these products should not be consumed.
